Syllabus

Text:  Intermediate Algebra by Miller, O'Neill, Hyde

Grading:

Exams--Each of 5 unit exams will be scored out of 100 points.  There will be no make-up exams but one exam may be re-taken at the end of the semester.  If an exam is missed, that will be the exam "re-taken" at the end of the semester.  You may choose to have your lowest exam score replaced by your score on the Final Exam.  You may not re-take one exam and have your lowest exam score replaced by your score on the Final Exam.  You can only do one of the two.  If you miss an exam then you can choose to take that exam as your "re-take" or have your Final Exam score (as a score based on 100) count as your score on the exam you missed.  The five exams will comprise 60% of your course grade.  The final exam will count 20% of your course grade (making it worth 167 points).

     Exam 1:  Sections 1.1 - 1.8, 9.1, 9.3, 9.4

     Exam 2:  Sections 2.1 - 2.5, 3.1-3.4, 9.5

     Exam 3:  Sections 4.1, 4.2, 4.4, 5.1 - 5.7

     Exam 4:  Sections 6.1 - 6.6

     Exam 5:  Sections 7.1 - 7.8, 8.1, 8.2, 11.1

     Comprehensive Final Exam

Homework:  Homework should be done and maintained in a notebook.  I will look at your homework the night of each exam.  Your homework grade will count 10% of your course grade.

Nightly Activities:  There will be multiple group and/or individual activities each night of class.  Your grade for these activities will be based on individual effort.  Your activity grade will count 10% of your course grade.

Extra Credit:  Extra points can be earned by doing selected extra credit problems.  You can seek help in doing extra credit problems but you should understand what you have done before turning in an extra credit problem.  You may be asked to come to my office to explain to me your solution to an extra credit problem.  All extra credit must be turned in before the last night of class.

Attendance:  Seminole State has a stated policy that a student may be withdrawn from a class by the instructor if he/she misses more than 10% of the classes.  Although I do not go to this extreme, I will not award credit for a course if the student does not attend class regularly.

Withdrawal Policy:  You need to withdraw yourself before the withdrawal deadline (March 23) if you do not wish to receive a grade for the course.  The College no longer allows teacher initiated withdrawals after the College withdrawal deadline.
